About Me
Akila McConnell’s mind (and waistline) expands as she eats her way around Atlanta and the world. She founded Unexpected Atlanta Tours & Stories, which includes Atlanta Food Walks and Atlanta History Tours, in 2015, to help guests dig deeper into the city’s amazing food and powerful stories. In 2020, as the pandemic hit, she pivoted into starting Unexpected Virtual Tours, which focuses on remote team building for corporate entities, and, in particular, diversity and inclusion events. An acclaimed food and travel writer, she was the food travel expert for About.com and USA Today for four years, and her book A Culinary History of Atlanta (Arcadia Publishing) was released in 2019. Akila’s superpower is her uncanny ability to always finish dessert.
