Hiring and Retention: Join the January Insider Pro Meetup

Natalie Harmon-Tatton and John Laverne will lead a chat about how to find the best staff — and how to keep them

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hiring and retaining the best staff for your company is difficult at the best of times. The pandemic has only strengthened what was already an applicants’ market and travel has been one of hardest hit sectors when it comes to employment.

So how can tour, attraction and activity operators and tech providers hire and retain the staff they need, and compete for employees with those who may be able to provide better pay and benefits?

January’s Arival Insider Pro Meetup will take this bull by its horns and discuss strategies for hiring and retention. Led by Natalie Harmon-Tatton of Go City and John Laverne of Bulldog Tours, it could cover the importance of having a diverse staff, how to recruit people from different backgrounds, and how to create an inclusive environment that retains talent.

“It’ll be interesting,” Jane Tougouma, Head of Community at Arival said. “We’ll have a lot of people who have had real challenges with this. But we’ll also have people who’ve had success with it — and we’ll chat about how.

“Our thinking is definitely not to talk about how hard it is to hire and how people are leaving or not coming back right now. Really, it’s more about strategies for hiring.

“So what’s working, what isn’t, and we’ll be learning from each other. We always say this, but, you know, who better to learn from than the community. And we have savvy HR folks that understand travel, and they’re going to provide some of their insights.”

The discussion will cover issues such as, what to do differently to attract and retain talent, how to you stand out in the job marketplace, and how to write a job description to attract the right people. The difference between skills-based hiring and experience-based hiring will also be tackled.

“This topic is a big one with many critical subtopics,” Tougouma said. “Our intention is to continue the conversation and learn together throughout the year.”
