Total sales by tour, activity, and attraction operators worldwide are down 76% year to date, according to Arival’s Recovery Survey, the latest report from its ongoing tracking of the pandemic on the industry. This is a remarkable shift in fortunes for an industry that had grown dramatically over the past decade to achieve $254 billion in gross sales in 2019.
Not all regions and sectors have been affected the same way. Countries with larger domestic travel markets and sectors featuring outdoor and small group experiences have fared better – or less worse – than others. Markets in the U.S. and Canada are down 67%, while Europe is down 79%.
Despite the significant decline in revenue, the overall outlook for business has improved: 21% of operators report a risk of failure if the lockdown continues for the next six months, vs. 32% back in April 2020. Many operators have seen business improve somewhat since the dramatic decline in March in April and have taken steps to stabilize their business.
Arival conducted its Recovery Survey between September 10 and October 9, 2020, to track the state of reopening and recovery among tour, activity, and attraction operators and the steps they are taking to address the challenges of the pandemic and related travel downturn. Arrival received 684 qualified responses.
