Increased energy costs are a major challenge, influencing everything from pricing to profitability for operators of tours, activities and attractions.

In Europe, inflation is at a record high 10.7% as of October 2022, when the region saw a 41.9% year-on-year rise in energy prices.

These surging energy prices show no signs of slowing and are having a significant impact on operators’ costs. As Arival recently reported, many operators have increased prices in 2022 to combat rising inflation. However, as inflation also impacts travelers’ budgets, savvy operators need to look for other ways to cut costs, protect profitability, and become more sustainable.

It is therefore all the more important to recognize and take advantage of all potential areas for savings, and to work even more efficiently as a company. In the downloadable efficiency guide below, we summarize all the surprising ways in which a booking system can play a central role in this.

Here are a few of our top tips:

1. Be bookable 24/7: reduce office hours through automation

Having an online booking system means your tour, activity or attraction can be booked around the clock, seven days a week. Thanks to the constantly updated display of available tickets, customers know whether they have a secure seat, and you avoid the risk of overbooking even without repeated confirmation. With the help of automated booking processes, you can also drastically reduce office hours and thus save direct costs for heating, lighting and also for staff.

2. Use flexible pricing: concentrate visitor flows to specific days or times

Flexible pricing is an excellent tool for directing bookings to specific days or times. For example, lower prices can encourage people to visit your tour, activity or attraction on certain days or at certain times, rather than spreading the same number of visitors out over a longer span of time, which is inefficient from an energy perspective. Whether it’s an hour a day or an entire day of the week, if you succeed in managing this over the long term, you may even be able to permanently adjust the opening hours of your offering, at least in your slower seasons, and further save on energy costs.

3. Switch to digital tickets: save costs, increase sustainability with online tickets and digital admission management

High energy costs affect all products, and office supplies are no exception. A complete switch to digital tickets allows you to fully eliminate the costs for printing, paper and technology, and subsequently for transport, shipping, storage and handling. By integrating your booking system directly with your on-site access system, such as turnstiles or scanners, you also improve the visitor experience.
