Accountant – Zoo

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of professional accounting and financial work involved in the preparation, formulation, and monitoring of the City and Zoo operating and capital budgets; various accounting assignments including reconciliations, computer data maintenance, accounting standards compliance; revenue and expenditure monitoring; and special departmental projects.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

The Accountant exercises no supervision.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Ability to meet job deadlines for assigned functions.

Responsible for the accounting and bookkeeping of the Abilene Zoological Society, which includes accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tax reports, deposits, financials, credit card statements, refunds, and other associated data entry, reports and balances.

Assists and coordinates the various aspects of accounts payable, purchasing, and other financial processes for the City’s Zoo department, which includes requisition entry, purchase card reconciliation, invoices or statements from vendors, check requests, and trip reports.

Communicate information to internal and external customers regarding accounts payable matters as well as accounting policies and procedures.

Perform various accounting reconciliations.

Respond to staff inquiries; provide assistance and technical advice.

Maintain information for monitoring revenues and expenditures of specific accounts assigned.

Modify specific accounting procedures to ensure conformance to policy and accounting standards.

Provide information; compile data; prepare written reports related to specific funds assigned.

Prepare comparative analysis of operating programs by analyzing costs in relation to previous fiscal years.

Assist the Director in developing operating and capital budgets.

Review operating budgets periodically to analyze trends affecting budget needs.

Perform maintenance of computer data.

Perform research and develop informational reports.

Directly assist internal and external auditors.

Assists with the day-to-day operations and special events of the Abilene Zoo.

Operate a City vehicle/personal vehicle to various locations on the City’s behalf and/or operate motorized equipment (golf cart) around the Zoo premises.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Accounting theory, principles, and practices.

Financial reporting techniques and methods.

Generally accepted accounting principles.

General customer service.

The safe operation of equipment/vehicles.

Skill to:

Operate a variety of office equipment including computers, calculators, scanners, and related technology equipment.

Use software including Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word.

Perform data entry with the speed and accuracy necessary for successful job performance.

Maintain time management with minimal direct supervision.

Organize effectively and multi-task various activities and projects.

Ability to:

Maintain confidentiality of client information.

Work independently.

Demonstrate a positive attitude and initiative.

Organize and plan work activities to meet deadlines.

Analyze accounting data for completeness and accuracy.

Develop a variety of financial programs.

Maintain and analyze statistical and financial records.

Establish, monitor, and prepare reports on operating and capital project budgets.

Utilize a variety of computer software.

Understand data processing systems and the relationship to accounting, budgeting, and reporting.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Travel to other sites and locations.

Interact with zoo guests in a professional and courteous way.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in an accounting environment including experience in bookkeeping, general ledger, accounts payable, and/or receivable is preferred.

Education/Training:

A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.

License or Certificate:

A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

First Aid and CPR certifications are required or the ability to obtain them within ninety (90) days of employment is required.

Special Requirements:

Work in outdoor conditions and in extreme heat and cold.

Work a flexible schedule that includes nights, holidays, and weekends.
