Description

Join the crew of Washington State’s oldest operating ferry, the Plover, as a seasonal Tour Guide and Deckhand. This part-time role offers a unique opportunity to combine maritime operations, customer service, and local tourism. You’ll assist with vessel safety and maintenance, engage passengers with stories of Blaine’s history, and help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all aboard. Ideal candidates are energetic, personable, and comfortable working outdoors in a marine environment while representing the City of Blaine with professionalism and pride.

Positions are available for both volunteer and paid seasonal employees.
Essential Job Duties

  • Welcome and check in passengers; represent the City of Blaine with professionalism.
  • Share local history and area knowledge with passengers of all ages.
  • Use iPads and related tech for ticketing and booking support.
  • Answer phones and provide excellent customer service.
  • Assist with docking, including line handling, knot tying, and vessel transitions.
  • Respond to emergencies (e.g., fire, flooding, man overboard); participate in all drills.
  • Steer the vessel in emergencies if required.
  • Perform routine maintenance: check oil, inspect bilges, monitor fuel, clean and maintain vessel.
  • Follow all Captain’s directions and perform other assigned duties.

Qualifications

  • Available Fridays through Sundays; additional days as needed.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Comfortable engaging with both adults and children.
  • Must pass Coast Guard drug screening and be subject to random/post-incident testing.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Preferred: TWIC, MMC (OS or AB), USCG Medical Certificate, or maritime experience.
