All services operated by Xanterra, including lodging, dining, retail, and tour operations, are currently open and continue to operate as planned for the 2025 summer season. Any potential government layoffs within the National Park Service do not impact our positions or job offers.

From troubleshooting to preserving our rich history and being stewards of our iconic lodges, hands-on skills are needed to get the job done right. There are a variety of positions at our parks and lodges that range from skilled technicians to skilled trades.

Job Summary:

Join Xanterra as the Director of Engineering at Yellowstone National Park, where you’ll lead the planning, development, and implementation of maintenance and repair operations for all park facilities. You’ll provide leadership and guidance to a collaborative team, ensuring the effectiveness of maintenance managers across various locations. Your role will also involve maintaining a preventative maintenance program to minimize equipment downtime and reduce costly consequences, while developing and executing annual financial and capital expenditure plans.

The Details:
Position Type: Full-Time, Year-Round
Schedule: Typical schedule is 45+ hours, 5 days/per week (will include weekends, evenings, and holidays)

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and implement procedures for all facilities in Yellowstone National Park under Xanterra’s contractual responsibility for maintenance and repair operations and construction.
  • Provide leadership and ongoing guidance, development and management of a team that has a collaborative approach that benefits the entire operation while maximizing the effectiveness of each maintenance manager’s location throughout Yellowstone.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance program to minimize downtime of equipment and reduce costly consequences of equipment loss, guest service interruption, and crisis management.
  • Planning and development of annual and five-year projected maintenance plans as a contractual requirement for the National Park Service and execution of the planned program.
  • Development and execution of annual financial plan for the Engineering Department managing resources to maximize efficiencies, productivity and profitability.
  • Development and execution of annual and three-year Capital Expenditure plan in accordance with Xanterra policy.
  • Plan and implement seasonal opening/closing and operation activities for all assigned facilities.
  • Coordinate Engineering activities with Xanterra General Manager, Executive Director of Operations, and Department Directors to achieve minimal operational disruption.
  • Ensure all actions are tracked in the company’s CMMS (Maximo).
  • Ensure contracts are executed for services, for projects in compliance with Xanterra policies.
  • Assist Director, Environmental Affairs, in the reporting, cleaning, oversight and prevention of spills or environmental hazards. Assist with the coordination and collection of regulated materials from within Yellowstone.
  • Assist Director, Risk Management, in the reporting, tracking, and oversight of workplace safety and training for the Engineering Department. Assist with the tracking, coordination and collection of all required documentation for Yellowstone.
  • Cultivating and maintaining an excellent professional working relationship with National Park Service (NPS) personnel and agencies, professional services, outside contractors, vendors, and Xanterra Directors and Support Departments.
  • Incorporate Continual Operational Improvement and best environmental practices into management of departmental responsibilities and planning of future projects.
  • Maintain current written policies for ensuring the safe operations of facilities and equipment owned or assigned to Xanterra Parks and Resorts and for the health and safety of Engineering/Maintenance employees.
  • Track and develop employee development within the Engineering Department including all appropriate training classes/programs for engineering staff.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • B.S./B.A. degree in engineering or related Engineering discipline, Facilities Engineering, Construction Management, Building Technology
    or
    Seven (7) to ten (10) years of professional equivalent managerial/supervisory level experience in facilities maintenance.
  • Experience in the development and management of a multi-million dollar budget.
  • Experience working with OSHA/Federal Government safety requirements.
  • LEED AP Accreditation/Green Build and/or Historic Preservation experience preferred
  • Preparation and management of construction management programs.
  • Compliance with all current related safety and health requirements.
  • Able to read, understand and comply with all current Xanterra, NPS and associated Federal and State regulatory requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and possess a current, valid driver’s license with a good driving record for the past three years.

Physical Requirements include:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, crawl, and kneel for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in a higher altitude environment.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, stand, and walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift boxes of materials of 30 – 50 lbs.
  • Ability to kneel or lay flat on the ground to inspect equipment.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain, including icy and snow-covered areas
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including on call, holidays, weekends, and evenings as necessary.
