Adventure Program Specialist – Town of Chapel Hill – Chapel Hill
This position is responsible for supervising and leading groups in adventure programming (bike, paddle, climb, etc.). Adventure program specialists will assist in promoting the benefits of adventure recreation by providing a safe, fun and enjoyable experience.
Supervise and lead adventure programs (climbing, biking, paddling, hiking, etc.) for all age levels.
Ensure the safe operation of the climbing wall.
Inspect and maintain equipment, set up and clean up materials and equipment.
Monitor participant use of equipment; address safety issues/concerns with participants.
Maintains enthusiasm and tact in all contact with the public, program participants, participants’ parents and other staff.
Carries out job duties in a safe manner in accordance with all Town, department and regulatory policies; follows safety procedures. Identifies unsafe situations and work hazards, corrects them if possible, and reports them to their supervisor.
Administer first aid and properly document each incident.
Performs other duties as assigned
Adventure programming principles, techniques, equipment materials and safe practices
Lead groups of all ages.
Understand and follow written and oral instructions; enforce rules and safety practices
Read, write and perform basic math calculations.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve swimming. The employee may be exposed to noise, infectious and/or contagious diseases, and inclement weather and extreme temperatures.
Work is typically performed while walking, standing, running, bending, crouching, climbing, swimming or stooping. Employee will occasionally lift light and heavy (50 pounds) objects
Must be 18 years of age at the time of employment.
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job.
EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent.
Three years participating in adventure/outdoor recreational programs.
One year experience leading adventure recreation-oriented classes or programs preferred.
A current certification in CPR/First Aid is required prior to start date.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Current belay certification preferred.
Wilderness first aid or first responder preferred.
American Canoe Association Certifications preferred.
