Wilderness Guide- Junior Rafting Instructor – TAG Adventure Tours LTD – Whistler
Summary:
As part of The Adventure Group (TAG), Wedge Rafting’s mission is to create spectacular experiences for people that lead to moments of personal growth. The Wedge Rafting Guide provides a safe, professional and memorable experience for our guests.
Responsibilities and Deliverables:
- Guide 2-hour round trips on the Green River in Whistler. This is a low volume, class II-III section
- Ensure safety is the first priority for guiding guests on the rivers
- Understand the river conditions, potential hazards and work with Lead Guide to manage risks
- Provide the guests with a positive experience: engage with guests, bring your own personality while maintaining a professional demeanor
- Work with the team to ensure the trip is set up well and the base is left clean and tidy afterwards
- Maintain open communication with colleagues, Lead Guide and Supervisor. Escalate any issues in a timely and efficient manner
- Learn about and share information on local landmarks, history, environment and area facts
- TAG is proud to have a dynamic team who roll up their sleeves to get the work done. As such, this role may require helping out other team members and departments as needed
Key Qualifications and Attributes:
- Previous experience in commercial raft guiding is required
- Must be at least 19 years old
- Have a high degree of competence in understanding rivers and guiding rafts
- Safety kayak experience a definite asset
- Current swift water rescue certification
- Maintain a minimum 16-hour first aid. 80-hour first aid is preferred
- Provide own safety equipment including lifejacket, rescue belt, fox 40 whistler, on-river watch, river knife, throw bag, thermal protection and helmet. Pro-deals available for staff
- Class 4 or 2 driver’s license an asset
- Able to lift a minimum of 60lbs
- Strong communication skills: able to provide very specific and clear direction
- Flexible and adaptable to changing situations. This pertains to engaging different guests as well as river conditions
- Stay calm under pressure and can manage multiple tasks or things happening in the moment
- Positive and professional attitude: willing to help out team, able to maintain a respectful demeanor with guests, staff and community members, is punctual and reliable
- Flexible to work varying schedules including weekends. Be accessible for communication of trip and schedule updates outside of working hours
