Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia seeks a dynamic individual to work in The MiX as a MiX Mentor to our teen members. The MiX, is a (free) membership based, teens-only space within the Science Museum of Virginia that encourages deeper engagement in STEM disciplines through a hands-on, maker-based environment. The MiX Mentor position will facilitate creative, inquiry-based projects within The MiX, working with teens ranging in age from 13-18. The MiX Mentor will primarily be responsible for direct facilitation of weekend programming (school year) and Monday-Friday programming (summer).

Additionally, as the role implies, a MiX mentor will serve as a positive, near-peer influence, helping guide teens toward potential career or college opportunities. This position will occasionally provide support during Museum events such as Science After Dark, Forge workshops and to OST (Out of School Time outreach) programming. The program supports the museum’s mission of “lighting the spark” in young people as they experience research-based approaches to learning 21st century skills.

Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Please note that this is a part-time position and will be scheduled for 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12-month period. No state benefits are provided.

Minimum Qualifications

Desirable candidates should have experience working with teens in an informal educational environment, demonstrate STEM based content knowledge, experience in informal science or art programming and/or 6-12 education, experience working with children from low-income and at-risk populations, strong organizational, problem solving, and communication skills and experience delivering STEM based classes, workshops, demonstrations, and activities in an informal setting.

The successful candidate will also have the ability to be a self-starter and work successfully with little supervision, have patience and flexibility, and the desire, commitment and ability to work with teenagers.

Additional Considerations

Experience with Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite or other video/audio editing software, and experience with social media (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter). Experience with both high- and low-tech tools, such as sewing machines, 3D printers, basic power tools, hand tools, and cameras. Previous experience mentoring youth and working with teens from low-income and at-risk populations.

Bilingual competency, particularly Spanish language.
