Hours: Part-time hours, some weekends and evenings

Job Summary:

As part of the Education Department at the San Antonio Museum of Art, Museum Educators work closely with the Director of Education and Education Department Managers to develop and implement learning and engagement experiences for audiences of all ages.

This is a part-time position of 15 to 20 hours per week; hours per week may vary based on projects, programming, and events. Work location is primarily on the SAMA campus in an office environment, but also includes regular offsite travel to locations in the San Antonio area to deliver outreach programming. Schedule to include some evenings and weekends depending on program needs.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Collaborates with the Education Department to plan learning and engagement experiences, develop studio art activities, create samples, research best practices, and write lesson plans for audiences of all ages.
  • Facilitates public programs, workshops, and gallery experiences, including hands-on studio art activities.
  • Assists in ordering art supplies, supply prep for programming, and maintaining the classrooms and storage area.
  • Participates in weekly Education team planning meetings, typically held Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m.
  • Supports ongoing evaluation initiatives through data collection, research, and surveys.
  • Helps identify opportunities to support SAMA’s strategic plan and Education Department goals.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in studio art, art history, art education, museum education, or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching children, youth, and adults; demonstrated ability to work with audiences from diverse backgrounds.
  • Educational experience in a museum, school, or community organization preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal skills and communication ability required; Spanish/English fluency preferred
  • Computer skills, excellent written, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Schedule varies based on programming needs, and may include daytime, holidays, weekends, and evening hours.
  • Adequate transportation for travel to local and regional instruction required.
  • Self-starter, independent and team player, prompt, organized, willing to ask questions/lifelong learner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and must enjoy interacting with the public, volunteers, and contractors, serving as an ambassador for the museum.

Physical Requirements:

The physical requirements of the position described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully.

  • Occasionally move items weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Physical ability to work around children, sitting, standing, running, and climbing stairs.
