Museum Educator for Student and Family Programs

In this role, you’ll be responsible for developing and implementing interpretive programming for student and family audiences, including exhibition interactives, school tours, teacher continuing education opportunities, family activities, and outreach events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Serve as liaison between Munson Museum of Art and educators at all levels to develop dynamic connections between Munson’s collections and exhibitions and school curricula from elementary to higher education in furtherance of New York State learning standards.

Work closely with Education Department staff and curators to develop programs and gallery educational activities for student and family audiences to enhance Museum gallery installations and special exhibitions, including interpretive text review and responsibility for training volunteer docents in giving school tours. Position requires occasional availability for evening and weekend activities.

Develop school programs:

  • Develop concepts, content, and logistics of school tours for exhibitions and gallery installations.
  • Identify and apply curriculum connections in gallery installations and exhibitions, referencing current museum pedagogy and NYS learning standards.
  • Develop programs for higher education students that align with teaching objectives.

Manage school programs:

  • Communicate with educators and manage all aspects of planning and scheduling of school tours and programs, including internal Museum preparation.
  • Develop educator training workshops for orientation to museum school programs.
  • Maintain Museum Education database for scheduling and reports.
  • Manage school program budget: monitor inventory and purchase supplies as needed; issue invoices; collect and deposit tour fees.
  • Maintain Munson’s student and educator web page as a reference for programs and resources.
  • Develop online supplementary educational resources to support museum-based programs.
  • Develop and analyze teacher evaluations for school programs.
  • Conduct tours as needed.
  • Maintain pertinent information on the docent web page for all student-based programs.

Community Outreach:

  • Assist the Education Department with community outreach programming, making occasional public presentations on museum exhibitions and collections at events hosted by other community organizations (e.g. World Refugee Day and Juneteenth events).
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of events such as Munson’s quarterly, day-long art-making event, Art Alive! Family Day, assisting in the development of youth crafts and activities.
  • Manage the J. Craig Heuss Summer Internship, including project development, application process, orientation, and supervision.

Assist Museum Education staff in the development and implementation of other projects and duties as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current practices in art education, museum work, art history, and theories of education and learning
  • Knowledge of a range of artistic processes, materials, and tools
  • Demonstrated organizational and management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Google suite and familiarity with online and social media
  • Excellent verbal, writing, and public speaking skills for diverse audiences that include students, educators, and community leaders
  • Knowledge of the needs of art teachers and other educators, including K-12 educators and New York State and Common Core Learning Standards.
  • Knowledge of Visual Thinking Strategies with diverse groups
  • Experience in using new technologies to deliver educational content
  • Experience with social media, print media, email newsletters, and other digital content
  • Demonstrated experience in creating art-making assignments for various age groups
  • Preferred experience with database entry and reporting

MINIMUM REQUREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree with relevant coursework and/or specialization in art education.
  • Three years or more of education experience in a museum or a similar cultural organization, including developing and planning educational programs and supervising individuals and projects.
