Mountain Events and Comp Services Supervisor

The Mountain Events & Competition Services Supervisor is a leadership and supervisory position responsible for overseeing Race Crew Levels 1, 2, and 3, while serving as the primary point of contact for most special events on Sun Valley mountains. This role requires advanced knowledge of alpine race and event operations, strong leadership and communication skills, and the ability to coordinate staff, volunteers, and interdepartmental teams to deliver world-class competition and community

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, preparation, and execution of alpine races and mountain events, ensuring compliance with FIS/USSS standards and resort policies.
  • Oversee the deployment of Race Crew 1, 2, and 3, assigning tasks and ensuring effective teamwork across all event levels.
  • Serve as the on-hill and venue point person for special events, coordinating with Mountain Operations, Snowsports, Guest Services, and Marketing.
  • Manage venue preparation including course setup, surface preparation, fencing, safety systems, signage, and event infrastructure.
  • Support timing and results management, TV/production crews, and jury or official requirements.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor Race Crew staff across multiple levels, ensuring skill development, safety awareness, and high-quality event delivery.
  • Provide daily leadership during events, delegating responsibilities, troubleshooting operational challenges, and maintaining a safe, efficient work environment.
  • Coordinate volunteer integration, providing clear instruction and oversight.
  • Act as a liaison between Competition Services, Mountain Events, and other departments, fostering communication and collaboration.
  • Ensure all competition and event venues meet the highest safety standards, implementing corrective actions when necessary.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with FIS/USSS rules, resort safety protocols, and risk management procedures.
  • Collaborate with ski patrol, grooming, and snowmaking teams to ensure a safe and fair racing environment.
  • Represent Sun Valley Resort as a professional and approachable ambassador during all mountain events.
  • Provide positive engagement with athletes, coaches, officials, and community members.
  • Balance event requirements with public mountain access to enhance both competition integrity and guest experience.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of alpine race operations, venue management, and competition services.
  • Proven leadership experience, including supervising crews or event teams in dynamic outdoor environments.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to ski or snowboard proficiently while carrying equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform on-hill manual labor (e.g., lifting, hauling, fence installation, course maintenance).
  • Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including early mornings, weekends, holidays, and peak event periods.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Preferred:

  • Previous supervisory role in race crew, mountain events, or large-scale resort operations.
  • Familiarity with FIS/USSS competition regulations and homologation requirements.
  • Experience with timing systems, safety fencing, air fence, and course maintenance equipment.
  • Certifications in avalanche safety, CPR/First Aid, or other risk-management training.
  • Ability to operate small machinery (snowmobiles, winch systems) for event logistics.
