Museum Education Manager – ICAN, Inc. – Utica
The Museum Education Manager will work in various roles to ensure museum programs and exhibits successfully inspire children to learn and expand their horizons. They will develop educational programs and community outreach and guide group visitors through the museum and coordinate/present educational activities. This is a newly created position that will help facilitate community-based programming and outreach during this time of transition and will continue when the new museum opens in 2023.
The Education Manager should stay current on trends as they relate to the NYS Education Department Standards and Curriculum. By incorporating innovative elements into their work, they increase the likelihood that visitors have an educationally immersive experience. The Education Manager will promote the philosophy and mission of the agency by performing the following duties.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement an annual education program plan for the following audiences:
- Mobile Museum programming and facilitation
- Classes, drop-in programs, mission-related events, etc.
- School program (onsite and in-school) to complement Core Standards
- Group visits (preschools, daycares, community groups, etc.)
- Develop an annual budget that details income and expenses, based on agreed-upon goals and metrics.
- Develop systems and track audience participation in educational programs, including the Mobile Museum.
- Coordinate with ICAN staff for fundraising (grants and sponsorships) and marketing of museum programs.
- Monitor and secure equipment, consumables, and supplies for programs and exhibits.
- Responsible for the oversight and facilitation of the Mobile Museum including scheduling, contract, insurance, staffing and supplies.
- Responsible for the oversight of the future museums’ Educational staff and Volunteer Program.
- Coordinates the Museum’s educational and/or program presence at schools, events and activities. This includes:
- Developing lesson plans.
- Developing budgets that fund the cost of the programs, staffing and overhead.
- Sharing details with the ICAN team for fundraising and marketing of programs and events.
- Potentially draft copy for grants to fund programs, on an as needed basis.
- Work with the exhibit development team, to ensure exhibits that are developmentally-, age- and educationally- appropriate. Ensure that exhibits:
- Complement Core Standards for NYS Department of Education.
- Encourage family engagement and promote scaffolding learning opportunities.
- Are unique to the region.
- Work with the Director and ICAN team to coordinate educational feedback on exhibits and programs, including the Mobile Museum.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in Education, Early Childhood Education or comparable field.
- Minimum of at least 5 years’ experience in Early Childhood Education.
- Supervisory / Management experience preferred.
