Horticulture Manager, Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for the overall landscape maintenance and horticultural standards of a designated garden area under the general direction of the Director of Horticulture. This role includes direct supervision of assigned staff, including gardeners, volunteers, and interns, to ensure timely and efficient completion of duties. The position requires hands-on garden labor, including the operation of equipment and transportation of tools and materials. Must be able to work in all weather conditions. Serves as Weekend Manager on Duty, as needed, and contributes positively to team collaboration and departmental goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Oversee and perform landscape maintenance activities in assigned garden areas, including planting, mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, irrigation, pest control, and spraying in accordance with established horticultural standards.
  • Supervise garden staff including crew leaders, gardeners, interns, and volunteers to ensure effective task delegation and efficient productivity.
  • Develop and manage daily, weekly, and monthly project schedules to meet deadlines and the expected level of project completion.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and clear communication with staff, volunteers, and visitors to foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
  • Evaluate and schedule staff, ensuring completion of personnel documentation and training to support professional development and garden excellence.
  • Maintain inventory and proper care of all equipment and tools in assigned area; manage and submit supply and materials requests as needed. Secure all equipment and tools at the end of the workday.
  • Conduct safety and procedural training for new and existing staff; maintain required safety documentation and ensure adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and staff training on irrigation systems, plant disease identification and integrated pest management; ensure compliance with chemical safety protocols.
  • Oversee the timely execution of seasonal color displays and bulb installations.
  • Ensure compliance with city-mandated water restrictions and related environmental guidelines.
  • Monitor and assist with the maintenance and function of water features.
  • Provide technical expertise in landscape maintenance and horticultural practices as needed.
  • Support plant records management and labeling within assigned garden areas.
  • Assist with educational and research initiatives, including demonstrations during special events.
  • Coordinate with education staff to align garden maintenance with educational programming needs.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide helpful information to garden visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in landscape maintenance & supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field preferred; Associate degree with a minimum of four years related experience may be considered.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities, manage workflow, and lead team members to meet project deadlines.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks with effective organizational and time-management skills.
  • Experience and knowledge of native plants, including identification, cultivation, and their role in local ecosystems.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs; perform repetitive bending, stooping, and walking across varied terrain in all weather conditions, following safety protocols.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word).
  • Apply pesticides and chemicals as needed (training provided). Willingness to obtain and maintain a Texas pesticide applicator license.
  • Flexibility to work varying hours, including evenings, holidays and weekends as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license required for operation of garden vehicles.
  • Experience with irrigation systems and water feature maintenance preferred.
  • Ability to pass a background check, drug screening, and physical evaluation.
