Amid a dynamic and ever-evolving urban landscape, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department stewards one of the premier urban park systems in America. San Francisco recently became the first city in the United States for which 100% of its residents live within a ten-minute walk of a park. Considered by San Franciscans to be one of the City’s most popular and effective public agencies, our Department manages and maintains more than 225 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces in San Francisco, including two outside of city limits: Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras. Our 4,100- acre system includes 25 recreation centers, 9 swimming pools, 5 golf courses and numerous athletic facilities, including sports courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields and gymnasiums. Included in the department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the Palace of Fine Arts, and TPC Harding Park golf course.

Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt. Pursuant to the San Francisco Charter Section 10.104, this position is exempt from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve (at will) at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
The Randall Museum is a nature and culture museum located in Corona Heights Park that provides exhibits, classes, workshops, presentations, special events, and many other hands-on learning activities for children and adults and receives over 100,000 visitors per year.
Under general direction, the Randall Museum Director will provide management and oversight of staff and non-profit staff and contractors; strategic planning; financial management; coordination of fundraising and non-profit board partnerships; facility management; and serve as the spokesperson for the museum and advocate to diverse communities in San Francisco.
Essential functions of this position include:
1. Development and implementation of institutional strategic and development plans, as well as an annual operating plan and budget.
2. Management and oversight of both City and non-profit senior staff, scientists and educators in their creation, design and implementation of curriculum, programming and exhibits.
3. Personnel management including performance evaluations, discipline, and recruitment as well as development of contractual staff.
4. Development and management of board and non-profit partnerships, seeking new program partners and developing community stewardship; management of the operational relationships with the City’s non-profit partners, which requires extensive Board and committee service.
5. Serve as the principal spokesperson for the facility at the Department level, before policy bodies, and serve as an advocate to diverse communities in San Francisco.
6. Financial management for all aspects of the facility; developing, managing, administering and monitoring funds from both the Recreation & Park Department (public) and the Randall Museum Friends (private). Monitors record keeping for programs, rentals, marketing and development.
7. Development of fundraising strategies, soliciting donations and promoting the facility and its programs and exhibits. Participating actively in fundraising and related activities to further develop institutional support; promote and manage the facility for use in rentals and site permits. Identify and pursue private funding to broaden institutional support, develop and manage earned income opportunities and programs that also augment public funding.
8. Development, updating and implementation of the Randall Museum master plan.
9. Management of overall facility maintenance including interior and exterior features. Planning and directing both public and privately funded capital-improvement projects. Working with a design team and contractors to facilitate the execution of capital improvements or major repairs to the museum.
10. Development and coordination of an overall strategy to bring the Randall Museum’s programs and exhibits to underserved communities within the city. Oversee the implementation of an equity policy as they relate to accessing the museum’s programs and/or opportunities for employment.
11. Lead the evolution of the museum exhibits and programming direction over time in order to respond to changing public interests or departmental and institutional priorities.
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fine arts, art history, decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines.
Experience: Seven (7) years of museum experience including two years of responsible supervisory experience.
Licensure: Possession of a valid California driver license at the time of appointment

• Master’s degree or post graduate work in Natural Sciences or Museum Studies
• Certificate of completion in Museum Studies
• Public or non-profit administration experience.
• Successful fundraising, grant writing and philanthropic experience.
• Capital project management experience as it relates to enhancing a cultural facility.
• Experience in the methods, techniques, and procedures involved in the maintenance and care of a collection of live animals.
• Experience in methods of designing and developing museum displays and changing exhibits.
• 2 years of recreational leadership with emphasis on instructing in the natural sciences and environmental interpretation.
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to multitask and work under pressure.
